My Population-Substance abusers

My assumptions about my population hasn't changed to much yet because I still have the initial thought that parents should be more concerned about what they do because it will effect they children and everyone around them. Due to my beliefs that families should take care of one another makes it hard for me to understand why some parents do what they do because it will effect their children. I think more precautions need to be taken by parents so their children can have just as good or even better life than they had.
My question have now would be is there a trigger among parent substance abusers that make them want to or feel the need to use alcohol. What I have learned so far is that there is many different substance used to abuse their body.
My initial thought about what a substance abuser would use would be drug, not alcohol or prescription drugs. I have found out that the children of substance abusers are effected more than people think. Children of substance abusers are affected in their school life, they usually have a harder time doing well in school and focusing during school. It also affects their behavior towards adults and other children because they have a different perspective on a social life. What the parent does effects the child in many psychological ways. It could also pose a potential anxiety disorder.

  1. Hi Beth,

Thank you for your post. I took a look a your first post on the population that you are researching, and took a look at this one...I have some questions:

-- After the introductory research that you have done, are you focusing on a population that abuses a particular substance (i.e., alcohol) or are you focusing on all substance abusers who happen to be parents?

-- When you are talking about the parents, are you making a distinction between people who have been abusing a substance before they had a child, or people who start abusing substances after they have a child? What is the likelihood that someone will start abusing a substance after they have a child, as opposed to before?

-- If someone is a substance abuser prior to starting a family, is it possible that the substance that they are abusing affects their decision making processes?

I look forward to your responses.

    Sincerely,
    Professor Wexelbaum

  2. After doing some further research I've narrowed my topic down to what the effect are on children with having parent who use alcohol as their choice of substance abuse. I guess I haven't really thought about the differences about when the parent started using and the different effects it could possibly have. So thank you that is something I need to look into and decide which one I'm going to be focusing on more. Depending on the financial situation and the family dynamics there could possibly many different triggers to having a parent start to become a substance abuser after the child is born verse them being a substance abuser prior to the child's birth.
Referring to your question if someone is using substances prior to starting a family it is quite possible their judgement has and was compromised. It very much so could effect their decisions because they wouldn't have a clear mind on the smart choices that need to be made for the future of their child and themselves. Maybe a choice could be that once they find out their life is going to change by having a family it could make them want to be clean. Yet I personally can't say what the effect will be because there is so many possible outcomes. Using substances affects their judgement and choices plain and simple.

  3. Hi Beth,

Thank you for your response. Narrowing down the topic will make the project much more focused. Please let me know if you need any assistance with your research.
